I reply: absolutely is the precept of the law of nature pertaining to gratitude more binding than is a new obligation contracted through one’s own promise, unless perhaps the principle or precept ‘keep promises’ is more obligating than the precept ‘be grateful to a benefactor according to his rank in giving benefit’.
